In this satirical look at human relationships, everyone we meet is either a patient or a therapist. Prudence places a personal ad at the encouragement of her therapist, and winds up on a first date in a restaurant with Bruce. Bruce comes off as a horribly, sexist loon, while Prudence seems both needy and over-demanding. She can’t understand, for instance, why Bruce won’t give up his live-in boyfriend. When Prudence unknowingly responds to Bruce’s second personal ad, they actually hit it off well enough to explore their possibilities. Are they being crazy? Their therapists rush to their sides like hired guns and the fireworks ensue. Premiering Off Broadway in 1981, this has been one of Durang’s most popular, and “sunnier” comedies.
